Butterfields Buds are traditional hard candy, not chewy candy. They are made to dissolve slowly, with fruit- and spice-forward flavors that are balanced rather than made to taste like dessert. Because each batch is handmade, the color, shape, and size may naturally vary.

Six flavors that belong to the cold months and when the air sharpens, the evenings draw in, and everything you reach for should feel like it was made for this exact moment. Peppermint and Spearmint bring the bright, clean coolness of a first frost. Wintergreen carries that crispness deeper. Cinnamon warms you from the inside. And then Plum and Cranberry Orange arrive — dark, rich, layered — the flavors of a holiday table, a winter orchard, a glass of something warm in your hands.

This is our signature winter collection. Not a sampler of everything we make — a curated set of the six flavors that belong to this season and no other.

Each flavor is made in our factory in Nashville, North Carolina, in the same copper kettles we've used since 1924. Together they are winter in a box, it is meant to be set out for guests, tucked into a gift, or kept close for the evenings when you want something that matches the season.

Product Details

Butterfields Buds are old-fashioned hard candy with a glasslike look and feel. They are meant to dissolve slowly; we do not recommend biting into them. The flavor is fruit- or spice-forward and balanced rather than made to taste like a dessert or an intensely flavored gummy candy.

Every batch is made by hand, and our colors come from fruit and vegetable sources. Small differences in color, shape, size, and sugar coating are normal and are not product defects.

All Butterfields candies contain coconut, a tree-nut allergen. Most flavors use natural flavor. Peach Buds contain both natural and artificial peach flavor as part of the longstanding recipe.

Candy Storage

Humidity is the enemy of hard candy. Keep Butterfields in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, away from heat and moisture.

Orders over $45 ship free, excluding Alaska and Hawaii. Other orders ship for a flat rate of $9.99.

Our standard processing time is 4–6 business days before an order leaves our factory. We ship Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. Carrier transit time begins after the order has shipped.

Need your order sooner? In the order-notes or special-instructions box in your cart, write RUSH REQUEST — Need by [date]. A rush note is a request, not a guarantee. Rush processing depends on production capacity and product availability. Expedited carrier service and rush handling may require an additional charge. Do not assume the request has been accepted until Butterfields confirms it.

Carrier transit time begins after the order has shipped. Orders to the West Coast can take approximately 5–10 business days in transit. Orders to Alaska or Hawaii can take at least 15 business days. Processing and transit times are estimates; carrier delivery dates are not guaranteed.

Because candy is a food product, we do not accept physical returns or restock returned candy. If your order arrives damaged, melted, incorrect, or defective, contact us within 30 days at 252-459-2577 or sales@butterfieldscandies.com. Include your order information and clear photographs when possible. We will review the issue and provide a replacement or refund when appropriate; you will not be asked to return the candy.

Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1924

For decades, Butterfields Candy moved—from Winston-Salem to Rocky Mount, Rocky Mount to Nashville—carried forward by families who believed the candy was worth keeping. Then in 2009, it went dark. The kettles went cold. The recipes sat waiting. And someone who spent 15 years carrying the memory of a candy that comforted her took a leap of faith and brought it back to life.

Are Butterfields Buds hard or chewy?

What should I expect from the flavor and texture?

Butterfields is old-fashioned hard candy, not a chewy or gummy candy. Each piece is meant to dissolve slowly. Our flavors are fruit- or spice-forward and balanced rather than made to taste like a dessert. Because every batch is made by hand, the pieces will not have the perfectly uniform size, color, or finish of mass-produced candy.

Are Butterfields candies vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free?

Yes. Butterfields candies are vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free.

Do Butterfields candies contain allergens?

Yes. All Butterfields candies contain coconut, which is classified as a tree nut. Please review the ingredient and allergen information on the individual product page before ordering.

Do you use artificial colors or dyes?

No. Our colors come from fruit and vegetable sources, including red carrot, turmeric, grapes, and spirulina, depending on the flavor.

Do you use artificial flavors?

Most Butterfields flavors use natural flavor. Our Peach Buds contain both natural and artificial peach flavor. This is part of the longstanding recipe I chose to preserve. Mixed assortments that include Peach Buds also contain that flavoring.

Do you offer sugar-free candy?

Yes. Sugar Free Peach Buds are available in an 8-ounce cello bag and a mason jar. They contain isomalt rather than sugar. Please see the product page for current availability and complete ingredients.

Why is there coconut in the candy?

Coconut is part of the traditional recipe and is used during the hand-folding process to keep the candy from sticking. Small pieces also remain in the finished candy. It is not a strong coconut flavor, but coconut is a tree nut and must be treated as an allergen.

Why do the pieces vary in size or color?

We make the candy by hand in small batches. Natural color sources and the light sugar coating can also affect how bright each piece looks. Small variations in color, shape, and size are normal.

How should I store the candy after opening it?

Is the candy sour?

No. Some flavors have a bright or tart finish, but we do not currently make sour candy.

The only thing I can say negative about these Buds are there's far to few. kidding aside I've tried many of the vast different flavor buds and haven't tasted a bad one yet just flavors I prefer. These hard candies are delicious—the flavors a real pleasure to enjoy. The ingredients—very good—comparatively. But don't expect them to arrive looking all shiny—to glisten with color like this. Perhaps to keep them from sticking together they are lightly powdered with sugar and so have a fine frosty scrim that somewhat hides their joyful coloring. They are enticing to see in the clear glass covered container we put them in, and each one of the pieces suprises—taste great. It's an awesome mix.

Nice variety of flavors

Nice variety of flavors. The cinnamon flavor is pretty strong. I most like a red hot. The experiment flavor is pretty mild, but I enjoy it. There’s one that taste like a fresh orange and that is probably my favorite. There’s another flavor in here that is very mild with barely any taste. Overall, I’m enjoying the variety very much.

Disappointing

I love your candies but I was very disappointed in this mix. The mix is about 85% cinnamon buds which is my least favorite flavor. There are very few of the mint flavors in the bag, and the cinnamon buds flavor is so strong that the whole bag tastes like cinnamon.

In the holiday mix I do not like the hot flavor. Can you possibly do a bag of just the light yellow flavor? They are awesome.

We give tiny gifts around the holidays and the little packets of candies was perfect. Aside from the jokes about grandma candy, most people have come to ask me where I got these and how they can get more. In particular, there is a LOT of interest in the orange cranberry flavor. It would be amazing to buy that flavor alone and throughout the year. Most of my colleagues would order them. I have to agree with the other reviews that I don't think the plum flavor was included this year. I didn't see anything like plum in the small packets I gave away or in the 1 lb bag I got for my office candy jar. It sounds like a great flavor that we would have enjoyed. The flavors are all very bright and intense in a good way.

I have tried all the flavors and tried this holiday flavor bag. Several flavors get tossed right away but the ones that were 'okay' stayed in the bag on the counter for about a month and then everything was thrown away. I even took them to work to be eaten there and they were not wanted there either! I really wanted to love these but it's a hard NO on ordering them again
