Muscadine Buds
Before you order
Butterfields Buds are traditional hard candy, not chewy candy. They are made to dissolve slowly, with fruit- and spice-forward flavors that are balanced rather than made to taste like dessert. Because each batch is handmade, the color, shape, and size may naturally vary.

The native grape of the American South. Wild. Juicy. Ours.
Muscadine is the first varietal grape, and its home is right here in North Carolina. In the hot, humid months of a Southern summer, they grow big and juicy — like large marbles hanging on the vine — with a distinctly wild flavor that no cultivated grape can match. You see them and you can't help but want to reach out and pick one right off the vine.
What sets the muscadine apart is its natural, floral, wild-fruit richness, a botanical depth that has nothing in common with artificial grape flavoring. This is a grape that grew up wild in Carolina heat, and it tastes like it. Untamed, full, layered with a tart floral perfume that is entirely its own.
That tart, floral quality pairs beautifully with our Ginger Buds, the warmth of mild ginger and the wild perfume of muscadine cut through each other seamlessly. Customers who discover one often reach for the other.
We are making this candy because this is where we're from. Nashville, North Carolina. The same factory since 1924. The same land that grows the muscadine. Nobody else is making a muscadine candy, because nobody else is here.
*Please note we coat the candy in powdered sugar, due to this, color and brightness may vary.
Product Details
Butterfields Buds are old-fashioned hard candy with a glasslike look and feel. They are meant to dissolve slowly; we do not recommend biting into them. The flavor is fruit- or spice-forward and balanced rather than made to taste like a dessert or an intensely flavored gummy candy.
Every batch is made by hand, and our colors come from fruit and vegetable sources. Small differences in color, shape, size, and sugar coating are normal and are not product defects.
All Butterfields candies contain coconut, a tree-nut allergen. Most flavors use natural flavor. Peach Buds contain both natural and artificial peach flavor as part of the longstanding recipe.

Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1924
For decades, Butterfields Candy moved—from Winston-Salem to Rocky Mount, Rocky Mount to Nashville—carried forward by families who believed the candy was worth keeping. Then in 2009, it went dark. The kettles went cold. The recipes sat waiting. And someone who spent 15 years carrying the memory of a candy that comforted her took a leap of faith and brought it back to life.
Dena Manning is the steward of that story.

Butterfields is old-fashioned hard candy, not a chewy or gummy candy. Each piece is meant to dissolve slowly. Our flavors are fruit- or spice-forward and balanced rather than made to taste like a dessert. Because every batch is made by hand, the pieces will not have the perfectly uniform size, color, or finish of mass-produced candy.
Yes. Butterfields candies are vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free.
Yes. All Butterfields candies contain coconut, which is classified as a tree nut. Please review the ingredient and allergen information on the individual product page before ordering.
No. Our colors come from fruit and vegetable sources, including red carrot, turmeric, grapes, and spirulina, depending on the flavor.
Most Butterfields flavors use natural flavor. Our Peach Buds contain both natural and artificial peach flavor. This is part of the longstanding recipe I chose to preserve. Mixed assortments that include Peach Buds also contain that flavoring.
Yes. Sugar Free Peach Buds are available in an 8-ounce cello bag and a mason jar. They contain isomalt rather than sugar. Please see the product page for current availability and complete ingredients.
Coconut is part of the traditional recipe and is used during the hand-folding process to keep the candy from sticking. Small pieces also remain in the finished candy. It is not a strong coconut flavor, but coconut is a tree nut and must be treated as an allergen.
We make the candy by hand in small batches. Natural color sources and the light sugar coating can also affect how bright each piece looks. Small variations in color, shape, and size are normal.

No. Some flavors have a bright or tart finish, but we do not currently make sour candy.
I really like Butterfields candies and muscadine is one of my favorite flavors. However, both of these muscadine packages seemed to have gotten hot and melted all together into one solid block making it difficult to eat. I assumed it was related to ordering and shipping during a heat wave.
Best grape flavored candy I’ve ever had. I have shared these candies with family and coworkers. Everyone has loved them. This is my 3rd order of candies. Each time I add a different one to try. Highly recommend. Love that they are a family owned and the attention to detail each order has.
A perfect flavor. I don’t always like grape, but muscadine is very good. I really enjoy this flavor!!
The flavor is exquisite and the candy is long lasting. My favorite thing is that they do not leave my mouth feeling grainy or like the sugar bugs have moved in. Pure tastiness.
love all of your products that I've tried so far ❤️❤️❤️
I think these are my favorites, though!!

These candies were so hyped, and I just don't find them special. Won't be buying again.
When finally received my bags they were hard as a rock. Like one big candy. I took a hammer and broke it up. Still ain’t it
These are fantastic tasting. We have grapes on our farm and they taste identical to the fresh ones,!!! ♥️♥️♥️
I was expecting a little stronger flavor. Other than that, the candy was good.

This product is scrumptious. My only complaint is that I wish these were individually wrapped. I would be willing to pay the extra price.
